Holiday fun for everyone! Non-Gebrokts!

pass_new2009jpgThis time of year there’s a secret out there that many Celiacs don’t know of in the special Passover food section at their local grocery store. Not all Kosher for Passover food is safe, but that labeled as “Non-Gebrokts” has no wheat or gluten in it and is free of contaminants, as well as pretty darned tasty! The cereals aren’t so great, but Passover noodles, such as the Manischewitz Passover Gold Wide Egg Noodles made from potato starch, are fantastic. Some of the cookies and cakes are a real treat, too! And people with other food allergies, like me, can find some other products, like the condiments and marshmallows, to use year round.
Searching for Non-Gebrokts recipes is another way to find great year-round gluten-free treats. Many Passover foods rely heavily on potato starch, so after Passover it’s a good time to grab it on sale!
They still haven’t come up with GF matzah yet, but for those who can tolerate it, there’s spelt matzah, or you can try and bake your own.
Passover is a strange holiday for a Celiac, but at least we can share the GF treats with the rest of the community! Cheers!
