Something for the ladies… Gluten Free Makeup!

kim1_2Makeup is one of those things we celiacs kind of forget about, but it can be a big issue, lots of ingredients, chemicals, and whatnot so how do you know what’s “safe?” After a few too many breakouts and puff-ups after spending a fortune at the makeup counter, I need a consultant!  Luckily I have a makeup artist in the family to demystify the cosmetic world for the allergy set.

My sister has been a makeup artist for 10 years now and has dealt often with customers’ allergy concerns.  According to her, makeup is like food, you should always read your labels!  And if you have any questions, call the company, they know what’s in there and are willing to tell you.  MAC in particular is very aware of celiac issues.

MAC’s company policy on gluten states:

“While a formulation may contain no wheat, oat, barley or rye derivatives, for the benefit of our gluten-sensitive consumers who may have cross-sensitivities, MAC takes the extra precaution of including corn, rice and soy in our research.”

If you call their customer service with a particular product of concern, they’ll tell you if there’s gluten, corn, soy or whatever ingredient of issue is in there, so they’re very up on their allergies!

Another product line that is very aware of allergy concerns is

Origins.  LOVE their stuff.  Origins is very good about listing ingredients, and they’re also very natural, so you don’t need an advanced degree in biochemistry to understand them! (BTW, I am in no way affiliated with these product lines, I just spend a ton of money on them!)

Most research says that celiacs can use cosmetic and hair products containing wheat and gluten products as long as there is no chance of ingesting them, as in lipstick or lip-gloss.  In any case, if you have any concerns about ingredients or the product in general, you should always call the company and they’ll tell you exactly what is in the product.  Cosmetic companies seem to be better than food companies at that…go fig…

Well, look fancy girls! Or guys, I don’t judge!  - Cheers!
