Today I was out doing some shopping with someone I had just met. When it came time for lunch, I asked her where she would like to eat. I decided not to share that I was eating gluten free and then become a burden on where we could eat. We both said how we like anything, so then I suggested Chipotle(One of my favorites and somewhere I can eat GF!). She had never been there but was open to trying it. Since she had never been there, I asked her what some of her favorites were…. I should have just stuck with the GF place. This is where it starts to get ugly… She said, “there is a good chinese buffet up the street, and I like chinese buffets.”

Suddenly, the wheat devil(looks like the typical 400lb. person you see at a buffet) appeared on my shoulder, and then the Gluten Free Angel(I picture her like a mini Jessica Simpson) appeared on the other. Long story short, Jessica Simpson could not outsmart the Wheat Devil, and he eventually sat on Jessica and won the battle. I had my first major gluten meal.
I should have just stuck with Chipotle and Jessica Simpson would have been spared. Get yourself some GF Soy Sauce so you can make Chinese at home.
Gluten free Chinese food does exist:
In New York City: CeliacChick blogs about it.
In Cleveland, OH: Gluten Free In Cleveland
Hey, your Aunt Kathy sent me the link to your blog because she knew I have celiac disease and thought I might like to see what you’re up to. I haven’t ever seen (not that I’ve really looked, though) the CeliacChicks blog, and enjoyed the info on the GF Chinese. However, living in KC, I’m not so sure, although we do have a P.F. Chang’s on the Plaza. I’ve never been, though. Most of the time I cook at home.
Don’t know if you’ve tried shopping the GF aisle at Whole Foods on Metcalf, but they have quite a selection of good stuff. Believe me, be glad you are young and recently diagnosed because I have been living GF for 23 years, and in the beginning the availability of quality GF products was not pretty, believe me. You are now living in a virtual cornucopia of GF foods by comparison! Yes, they’re expensive, but at least the majority of items I’ve tasted are actually tasty, especially the Tinkyada pasta products. A MAJOR improvement over the corn-only pasta.
