I love sushi. Especially when it is half price at my favorite local restaurant, Kona Grill! Tonight, my girlfriend and I met a couple of friends there for Happy Hour. Usually, I would get a nice, cold, fresh, beer, but tonight I opted for a margarita (beer is going to be my downfall). Sushi is best when dipped in soy sauce that is mixed with some wasabi. Since, I am new to this lifestyle change (gluten-free eating that is), I don’t know all the particulars, like what brands of soy sauce are GF… I decided to eat first, and do my research later.
After we finished our meal (it was really good!), I started to get pains in my stomach. Nothing I had to run to the bathroom for or made me physically show it, but I could tell something hurt me. So, the conclusion to my story….
Do I have to be “one of those people” who have to start carrying around their own food and condiments?
“Waiter. Please take this bottle of gluten free soy sauce and ranch dressing to the chef. Thank you! Will they hold my cooler at the coat check?”
It’s okay – they’re (restaurants) getting used to it and you will too
Just remember: no artificial crab!
Mike,
I am just reading some of your posts after following you on Twitter (TCStaples). The best thing to use in place of soy sauce is Braggs Amino Acids. You really won’t notice much difference in taste. Yes, I carry it with me when I go out for sushi. Some brands of Tamari are wheat free just be sure you read the label.
i have taken my own gluten free soy sauce to many a sushi restaurant. i get the really small glad containers, slip it into a ziplock sandwich bag, and put it in my purse….of course you don’t have a purse. but it is do-able
i usually just try to make a joke when i whip out my personal stash of sauce. it’s so awkward!
My husband travels. His favorite is sushi and once you know what to avoid (spider rolls, fake crab…) it is a great gluten free meal. He carries a little airplane size Jack Daniel’s bottle filled with Soy Sauce. It is airplane legal and he feels more “manly” with a booze bottle than a soy sauce bottle!
