Pizza Too Good to be True! *UPDATED

*UPDATE*  Some Godfather’s Pizza locations do have gluten free pizzas!

Here is my official review of Godfather’s Pizza’s gluten free pizzas. It was a great experience! Please check all the photos and detailed description of the kitchen.

The following story is now proven inaccurate, and is for comedy only…

I heard Godfather’s Pizza was now searving Gluten Free pizzas. I am a pizza LOVER, so I was very excited!

I went to the Godfather’s near my house on an afternoon while they were serving their lunch buffet. After I paid, the guy at the counter asked me if there was any pizza I would like him to make. I asked for a Gluten Free meatlovers in a small. I asked for a small because I didn’t want him to waste a whole Gluten Free pizza on just me. He assured me that everyone loves it and doesn’t know the difference, so he would just cook a large and put it on the buffet. My pizza arrived and it was GREAT!!! The crust looked a little different, but was still very good. I was extremely excited that I had found a local place with Gluten Free Pizza!

I couldn’t resist, so I returned 24 hours later. I asked again(a different employee than the day before) for a Gluten Free meat-lovers pizza…. He looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. I repeated myself over and over… and I still got the same confused look. I explained how I was here yesterday and they cooked me a gluten free pizza and it even talks about them on their website… I’m sure I don’t have a speech problem and I could not have been misunderstood the day before. The manager assured me he had never heard of gluten free and that he did not offer them…. he then told me my choices of crust: thin, hand-tossed, pan, or GOLDEN! It felt like someone had just blown out the candles on my birthday cake and taken away all of my fun… The day before they had made me a GOLDEN CRUST pizza and not a Gluten Free crust pizza!!! BUMMER!  It is a good thing I don’t have the stomach type of symptoms, or the day before would have been a really BAD one…

Some things are just too good to be true!

Get yourself some gluten free pizza crusts to make at home… it may be your only option.

(it doesn’t say gluten free on their website anymore, but I swear it used to!)

I had a similar experience at the Soup Man downtown in Saint Louis. Prior to being diagnosed with Celiac, I used to eat there all the time. My favorite was the lobster bisque, which I assumed had wheat flour in it. So I stopped going altogether. Some co-workers of mine were walking down there one day so I asked them to find out if they offered any gluten-free soups. They came back with a very surprising answer. They said that the owner of the shop said that all their soups were gluten-free.
A week or so later, a group was heading down there again, so I decided to test this out. The owner was there again, so I asked her the question again. She replied, “Yes. All our soups are gluten free. Now, some of them do have wheat in them.”

I’m happy to say that they do indeed have some delicious GF soups (the seafood gumbo is my favorite), but they are certainly not all GF. http://www.originalsoupman.com

There are starting to be more options out there! In Clackamas, OR there is a pizza place called Garlic Jim’s that offers a gluten-free crust for almost all of their pizzas (all but 2)! It’s pretty darn good, too! Finally we’re being recognized! It won’t be long before the GF rule the world! ;)

  3. i just found out recently that the Garlic Jim’s in our area in Washington State offers GF pizzas. I went in and spoke to the manager to see how they handled it and to make sure there was no cross contamination. I was surprised at how concerned they were to have no gluten flying around, so they closed one weekend and thoroughly cleaned, took down the ceiling tiles and vacuumed, wiped everything down. The company even has their dough pre-made elsewhere so there is no wheat flour on the premises. They also use a corn meal and rice flour blend now on the pans for all of their pizzas.
It does cost a little more to order Gluten Free but when you have not had pizza other than home made in 12 years it was a treat. My husband thought mine tasted better but I thought it was great since I did not have to cook:)

    (Followed you here from twitter)

Traveled 3.5 hours because we heard a little ice cream kiosk had GF waffle cones and fancy GF ice cream flavours. We got there and the assistant kept trying to sell us the lemon sorbet because it had no dairy in it. Had _no_ clue what GF was. Very disappointing.

I make my own crust from a Bob’s Red Mill mix. It is very easy to make and wonderful. The mix actually makes 2 crusts and I save the dough from the second and form it into bread sticks, sprinkle them with garlic and bake. Yummy!

More and more pizza places are offering gluten-free pizzas, but you still have to be really careful about confirming the gluten-free status and preparation method. In Portland and Arizona, Picazzo’s Pizza has safe gluten-free pizza. In Californa, Amicis offers gluten free pizza in many locations (check their web site). Then of course many gluten-free bakeries have a gluten-free pizza… so you have many options, besides making your own. I make Carol Fenster’s excellent pizza crust at home, or have frozen Amy’s rice crust pizza.

Here’s a review I wrote of the Amici’s GF pizza, if anyone is interested:

They have a good handle on CC but I would never trust a casual pizza chain.

    Happy GF pizza hunting!

  7. Sigh…I’m in desperate need of a GF pizza. Been GF since November…hating every minute of it.

  8. Mike says:

We need to get somewhere like CiCi’s Pizza, Pizza Street, or another cheap chain to offer a GF crust.

  9. Janelle says:

In the Kansas City area we have Waldo’s Pizza (2 locations) and Stone Canyon Pizza in Parkville (also serving gf panini sandwiches). Nationwide chain Uno’s Chicago Grill recently got a complete gluten free menu. It includes single sized gluten free pizzas. Pepperoni or plain cheese. They are good, but not great. It is exciting to be able to get their gluten free menu and actually choose pizza from it. Our local Pizza Street has a gluten free crust available by special request because they have a child with celiac, but it is not part of the whole chain.

  10. Mike says:

    @Janelle
    PIZZA STREET!!!!!! Which one?
I used to eat Pizza Street and Cici’s all the time… I miss them!

  11. Janelle says:

I double checked with the Pizza Street. They do them, as I said, but because it is not something that is part of the chain they have patrons bring in their own crust. Shawnee and Olathe, KS both do this regularly. They will top them any way you like. And Rick, owner of the O’Fallon, MO location of Pizza Street, has an Uncle who is GF. He is happy to top any crust you bring in. He recommended the rice crusts that come frozen. If you call ahead you might find that any of your favorite places would do this.

  12. Don'L says:

Godfather’s on 108th and Maple serves gluten free pizza on Tuesdays only. They are certified as a gluten-free place. You can order whatever toppings you want. It’s so nice to go into a place and order off the menu. The crust is thin, it’s an individual sized pizza, moderate cost, but well worth it.

  13. Don'L says:

I forgot to say in Omaha, NE and Tuesdays are the only day they have it. Also-they are the only Godfather’s that serves GF pizza at this time.

  14. GFDOGOODIE says:

They Have the Best GF Pizza On Cape Cod actually any where!!!

Godfather’s in Cedar Falls, Iowa has GF Pizza!!!! So exciting!

Hi, Like most I am looking for gluten free pizza, however it also has to be, Dairy Free, Wheat Free, Egg Free, Corn Free, Fruit/Sugar and Citrus Free. There, think there is any hope for me? If I can just find a good pre-made crust or frozen dough, I can put my own soy cheese and veggies and meat on it. Of course sauce would be a great help as well. I live in a very small area where GF products are very limited. I truly appreciate any suggestions/help. Thank You..
I have been GF plus the others for about 1 Month and Finally..after many, many years, I feel really good.
