Gluten Free Toasters

Do you own a strictly gluten free toaster?

What are your experiences owning one?

Do you have a toaster for gluten products and one for gluten free?

Did you even realize that a toaster can contaminate your food with gluten?

I ask these questions, because recently I bought some Van’s Gluten Free Waffles.  I took them out of the freezer anticipating popping them into a toaster, but realized I don’t own a toaster! hahaha.  I ended up cooking them in a skillet on the stove.

I don’t own a toaster for a few reasons:

  • I don’t eat a lot of bread products.
  • If I do have gluten free bread, I usually make something like a grilled cheese or breakfast sandwiches on the stove.
  • I don’t want it to get contaminated with gluten.
  • It would be so easy for a guest to pop a slice of regular bread in it and I would never know.

How do you tackle this dilemma?

  1. I don’t own a toaster either…Mostly since I don’t eat bread…have a great day!

i have a toaster oven that my roommate knows he cannot use and there isnt much issue there. i have been using n-ergy tapioca bread for sandwiches and use the oven for as much as i can instead of my big oven because it takes FOREVER to heat up and is never at the temp it says it is.

worst case scenario if some one put gluten containing stuff right on the rack i will wash it and run it through the dish washer (unless the stuff is burned on this should be perfectly fine, and if it is burned on to the point i cannot wash it off i will sand blast it or just get a replacement rack)

With the advent of Udi’s Gluten free bread. There is no need to toast bread now! :)

It is just great out of the bag.

  4. Jane says:

I use a toaster oven – that way we can throw the things that the bread sits on in the dishwasher :) or cover them with foil.

We have two toasters – a 4-slice gluteny one that we had before I was diagnosed, and a 2-slice non-gluten one (same model, just smaller). The glutenous toaster is down in the far reaches of the kitchen, at the gluten end of the counter = gluten land. When we have friends come, we just explain. And when we had a house-sitter I put it in a closet. We also have a gluten-covered cutting board (in gluten land). It works out pretty well – my husband can have his morning bagel without contaminating the rest of the kitchen!

And that non-gluten toaster has seen a lot of Udi’s bread and Van’s waffles. I agree that Udi’s is good even untoasted, but there’s something about buttered toast (well, in my case it’s ghee)…

I LOVE the van’s blueberry waffles.

@ Rob – I have been looking for Udi’s everywhere. I was teased with some samples at a cooking demonstration but it is sold out everywhere!!

At home we use a toaster oven and it’s gluten free only. We have a regular toaster for wheat bread. At work we have a toaster oven and I use tin foil to protect my food. My company orders it and they are also pretty good about getting specially requested items. Otherwise I would just bring my own tin foil and anything else I need.

When it comes to guests, my family and close friends are well educated on what is OK at our place. For other guests, we try to give them a briefing of the important things when they arrive or ahead of time via email (if we are expecting a larger group and don’t want to explain 10 times as people arrive).

The only problem is getting my boyfriend to remember to give this quick overview to guests when I am not home!

I have the one toaster for the household but then use toaster bags if I’m making something gluten free for me.

  8. Gluten Free says:

You could put a big skull and crossbones (poison symbol) sticker on the toaster. Or just put a big sign up that says not to use it.

Would you be able to recommend a good store bought brand name for gluten free bread? I want to do a review on it for my blog.

  9. Matt says:

@Gluten Free, i use Enr G bread (the tapioca kind) they make 3 or 4 types, the tapioca being the best tasting to me (i toast it for everything though, untoasted it doesnt taste as good). it is shelf stable so you dont have to freeze it or eat it fast until you open it. a lot of people do not like it but then again i have heard a lot of people rant and rave about bobs red mill bread mixes and personally have found them horrid

My mom had 2 toasters and on hers she has a post-it that says GF on it along with all of her stuff in the refrigerator .

I have a four slot toaster. My family knows that the two slots on the right hand side are Gluten Free Only! I just trained them, and now they know. I have never been contaminated by our toaster. Thank goodness! If you have guests, just make sure you mention it. I have toast once or twice a week. I love Udi’s Gluten Free bread. It makes having sandwiches and toast a much more pleasurable experience since becoming GF 10 years ago.

  12. Mark says:

We have two toasters, a nice Kitchen Aid and a cheap one, guess which one the celiac gets?

  13. Sonia says:

I got a brand new toaster oven at the same time I went GF. I LOVE toaster ovens for everything from reheating, to GF baking, to making a full dinner. More energy efficient, faster to heat up and if you have a good one – very Versitle!

If you’re only cooking for 1-3 people it can be very handy. Mine has a convection setting too so along with the fact that it heats faster – it really cuts cooking time.

  14. I live alone so everything I own is gluten free! ;-) However, if I was having guests and anticipated them having non-GF bread products I would probably get a cheap toaster they could use and hide mine away in a closet until they left.

How do we add a coupon code to an order.
I would like to order the GF bracelets.
    THank you.

    @Tina
